What is inside

Black outside. Gold inside.

They call chaga (Inonotus obliquus) the mushroom multivitamin for how much one mushroom holds. Its black crust is rich in melanin; inside are polyphenols, the antioxidant compounds it is known for, with triterpenes and polysaccharides, beta-glucans among them. And because it grows on birch, it carries betulin and betulinic acid from the tree.

The compounds inside
  • NHHONHHO
    Structure, simplified
    Pigment · the black crust

    Melanin

The dark pigment that gives chaga its black, cracked outer layer.

Why it mattersWhat makes chaga black, and the compound it is best known for.

In this extractNaturally present in chaga.

On recordIn fungi, melanin is known as a shield against sunlight and cold.

    Polyphenols

A group of compounds found in the rust-brown interior of chaga. They are the antioxidant compounds it is known for.

Why it mattersA large family of natural compounds, also found in tea, berries and cocoa.

In this extractNaturally present in chaga.

  • HOCH₂OH
    Structure, simplified
    Triterpene · from the birch

    Betulin

A compound of birch bark, and the reason the bark is white. Chaga takes it up from the tree it grows on.

Why it mattersIt comes from the birch the chaga grows on.

In this extractIt does not dissolve in water. That is why the extract is made twice: hot water, then ethanol.

On recordFirst isolated from birch bark in 1788, by Johann Tobias Lowitz.

  • HOCOOH
    Structure, simplified
    Triterpene · from the birch

    Betulinic acid

A close relative of betulin, and like it a compound that comes from the birch.

Why it mattersA close relative of betulin, formed from it.

In this extractCarried into the extract by the same ethanol step.

  • HOOH
    Structure, simplified
    Triterpenes · dissolve in alcohol

    Triterpenes

A group of natural compounds that make up the chemical profile of chaga.

Why it mattersThe same class of compound that makes reishi bitter.

In this extractNaturally present in chaga.

On recordInotodiol, chaga’s own triterpene, was described in 1958 by Ludwiczak and Wrzeciono, in Poland.

  • OOOOO1,6
    Structure, simplified
    Polysaccharides · dissolve in water

    Beta-glucans

Sugars naturally present in mushrooms, in their cell walls among other places.

Why it mattersThe best-known compound in functional mushrooms, and the one a good extract is judged by.

In this extractMeasured in the 10:1 extract: 9.9% (ALS, accredited laboratory).

On recordThe standard yardstick for a mushroom extract: the higher the confirmed level, the more concentrated the extract.

Beta-glucans are the compound measured in the 10:1 extract. The others are naturally present in chaga. Inonotus obliquus appears in 451 papers indexed on PubMed (October 2026). The drawings are simplified. “Why it matters” says what a compound is or is known for, not a promised effect.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Mostly as an everyday mushroom, taken daily all year, and by many as a dark, caffeine-free cup in place of an afternoon coffee. It is a food supplement, not a medicine, and individual experience varies: the reviews on this page are our customers’ own accounts.

At any time of day. It contains no caffeine, so many people have it in the afternoon in place of a coffee.

No. Ethanol is used in the extraction and is evaporated afterwards.

The capsules and the powder are the same 10:1 extract: 1,000 mg a day, as two capsules or two scoops. The drops are a 15:1 liquid extract, 2 ml a day. Choose the one you will actually take every day.

A fresh bottle at the interval you choose, at 20% off. Pause, skip a delivery or cancel at any time from your account. There is no minimum term.

It is not for children, or for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Chaga is naturally high in oxalates: if you have a history of kidney stones, talk to your doctor before taking it. If you take medication or are under medical care, talk to your doctor first.

Orders are dispatched within 1–2 working days. UK standard delivery takes 3–5 working days and is free on orders over £50. Your first order has a 60-day guarantee, even opened. Delivery, returns and subscriptions are explained in full on the Help page.
