Cordyceps sinensis
Meet Cordyceps.
Cordyceps (Cordyceps sinensis) is a valued mushroom with a rich history. In the traditional practices of the Far East it was used as a natural complement to the diet in demanding, high-mountain conditions. In the West it became popular in the 1990s, as part of the routine of Asian athletes and highly active people.
The compounds inside
Structure, simplifiedNucleoside · characteristic of the species
Cordycepin
An organic compound characteristic of this species of mushroom, and named after it: Cordyceps.
Why it mattersFound in cordyceps and named after it. It is the compound this mushroom is best known for.
In this extractNaturally present in cordyceps.
On recordFirst isolated from a cordyceps mushroom in 1950 (Cunningham and colleagues, Nature).
Structure, simplifiedNucleoside · a close relative
Adenosine
A close relative of cordycepin: the same structure, with one more hydroxyl group.
Why it mattersA compound found in every living cell, and one that cordyceps extracts are characterised by.
In this extractNaturally present in cordyceps.
On recordThe marker the Chinese Pharmacopoeia uses to check the quality of Cordyceps sinensis.
Structure, simplifiedSugar alcohol · dissolves in water
D-mannitol
A sugar alcohol: a chain of six carbons with a hydroxyl group on each.
Why it mattersAlso called cordycepic acid: one of the first compounds described in cordyceps.
In this extractNaturally present in cordyceps.
On recordNamed “cordycepic acid” when it was described in cordyceps in 1957, and later identified as D-mannitol.
Structure, simplifiedPolysaccharides · dissolve in water
Beta-glucans
Long chains of glucose, naturally present in the mushroom.
Why it mattersThe best-known compound in functional mushrooms, and the one a good extract is judged by.
In this extractNaturally present in cordyceps.
On recordThe standard yardstick for a mushroom extract: the higher the confirmed level, the more concentrated the extract.
These compounds are naturally present in cordyceps. The beta-glucan figure in the lab panel was measured on the 10:1 extract powder, not on the drops. The drawings are simplified. “Why it matters” says what a compound is or is known for, not a promised effect.

How we did it
Where a marketplace listing hid the ingredient statement, we recovered
it from the brand’s own website — bringing 264 of 273
listings to a readable standard.
Every lab document was opened and read. Photos, badges,
spec sheets and marketing graphics did not count; broken links were graded down.
A figure was recorded only where the number sat directly against the
term it describes.
A clean ingredient statement is the seller’s own claim, recorded
as published — not independently verified here. Listings and lab documents change;
these findings describe them as of 15–16 August 2026. Prepared from a master
database of 273 listings, one row per product. Not medical advice; no statement evaluated
by the FDA or MHRA.
