What is inside

Black outside. Gold inside.

They call chaga (Inonotus obliquus) the mushroom multivitamin for how much one mushroom holds. Its black crust is rich in melanin; inside are polyphenols, the antioxidant compounds it is known for, with triterpenes and polysaccharides, beta-glucans among them. And because it grows on birch, it carries betulin and betulinic acid from the tree.

The compounds inside

    Pigment · the black crust

    Melanin

The dark pigment that gives chaga its black, cracked outer layer.

    Polyphenols

    Triterpene · from the birch

    Betulin

A compound of birch bark, and the reason the bark is white. Chaga takes it up from the tree it grows on.

In this extractIt does not dissolve in water. That is why the extract is made twice: hot water, then ethanol.

On recordFirst isolated from birch bark in 1788, by Johann Tobias Lowitz.

    Triterpene · from the birch

    Betulinic acid

A close relative of betulin, and like it a compound that comes from the birch.

    Triterpenes · dissolve in alcohol

    Triterpenes

A group of natural compounds that make up the chemical profile of chaga.

In this extractNaturally present in chaga.

On recordInotodiol, chaga’s own triterpene, was described in 1958 by Ludwiczak and Wrzeciono, in Poland.

  • OOOOO1,6

    Polysaccharides · dissolve in water

    Beta-glucans

Sugars naturally present in mushrooms, in their cell walls among other places.

In this extractMeasured in the 10:1 extract: 9.9% (ALS, accredited laboratory).

On recordThe standard yardstick for a mushroom extract: the higher the confirmed level, the more concentrated the extract.

Beta-glucans are the compound measured in the 10:1 extract. The others are naturally present in chaga. Inonotus obliquus appears in 451 papers indexed on PubMed (October 2026). The drawings are simplified.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

The daily cup for the cold half of the year, and the afternoon coffee swap. People take it for the ritual — dark, smooth, caffeine-free — and for what is in it: the densest natural package of melanin, betulin, polyphenols and beta-glucans in the range, from a mushroom Siberia has drunk through its winters for centuries.

Coffee-lovers who run on it after two and want a way off. Winter people who want one daily to lean on from October to March. Anyone who’d rather stay ahead than catch up, and wants the strongest natural daily rather than the sweetest.

Inonotus obliquus is a sclerotium, not a cap-and-stem mushroom: a dense black mass that grows for years on living birch, golden inside. Ours is wild-harvested from birch, dual extracted in water and ethanol, concentrated 10:1 to 1,000 mg per serving, assayed at 9.9% beta-D-glucans and DNA-verified to the species.

Two capsules with lunch, or two 500 mg scoops of the powder (1 g) in hot water as the afternoon cup. Drops: 2 ml under the tongue. Follow the dosage on your jar and don’t exceed the stated daily dose.

Dark, smooth and faintly vanilla — closer to a mild coffee than to a mushroom. Most people drink it straight in hot water; some add a splash of milk. The capsules are tasteless.

None. That is the point of the afternoon cup: you get the ritual and the dark, roasted taste without anything that keeps you up.

Because chaga is not a mushroom you can farm in a tray. It forms slowly on living birch, so the only real chaga is cut from the tree. “Chaga” grown on grain is mycelium harvested with its substrate — and it is milled with the grain.

Because ours was measured. Chaga naturally carries far fewer beta-glucans than reishi or lion’s mane; a chaga figure of 30% or more is almost always a “polysaccharide” number, which counts starch. Our 9.9% is an accredited assay by ALS, published in full — open it here.

Three things, by three independent laboratories: beta-D-glucan content (ALS, accredited), species identity by DNA barcoding (InventUR, University of Rzeszów — 99.3% Inonotus obliquus) and a full safety panel on the lot — heavy metals, microbiology, PAHs, ethylene oxide and irradiation (GBA Polska, PCA-accredited). All three signed reports are published in full.

Same extract, three ways. Powder if you want the cup — it is the format most chaga customers choose. Capsules if you want no taste and no measuring. Drops if you want it under the tongue in seconds. The daily serving is the same.
