We examined our mushrooms using DNA barcoding

Each organism has a fragment in its DNA that is unique to it. Just like human fingerprints. DNA barcoding is a research method that uses this property. It allows you to check what organisms (plants or fungi) are actually in dietary supplements. It works by scientists analyzing a small fragment of DNA from the product and comparing it with the NCBI database to identify what species it comes from. With this method, you can clearly verify the authenticity of the product.

We subjected 5 of our mushroom supplements to DNA testing:

  1. Lion's mane
  2. Reishi
  3. Chaga
  4. Cordyceps

For each of them, it was clearly confirmed that the samples contained exactly the mushroom species declared on the label.

When "Identity(%)" is higher than 97, the result is considered unambiguous.

Why is this confirmation important?

When you read popular science articles or scientific publications about the properties of, for example, Lion's mane, they specifically refer to the Hericium erinaceus mushroom species. However, this is not the only mushroom of the Hericium genus that is commercially used in industry. If you consume, for example, Hericium coralloides (beech lion's mane) or another lion's mane, there is no guarantee that the effects will be consistent. But what if the extract inside is a completely different type of mushroom, not Hericium?

To be sure of the effects and safety, you need to be sure of the content . In the case of botanical and fungal raw materials, there is always a risk that, for example, the supplier of the raw material has dishonestly used a different species of organism than the documents presented, which has similar organoleptic properties. The motives for this may be different, e.g. economic, when obtaining an extract from a different species is cheaper or easier. All this may happen even without the awareness of the manufacturer of the supplement, who is convinced that it has included what it should have.

The aforementioned concerns about the lack of compliance of the content with the declaration on the label are not abstract at all, it is a real problem in the dietary supplement industry and not only. Not every company has sufficiently advanced quality control systems to protect against all attempts at counterfeiting. Plant and fungal raw materials are particularly at risk because there are few laboratories specializing in species identification, research is usually expensive, and awareness of their existence and possibilities of execution is low. In practice, such research is done exceptionally rarely. That is why we are particularly pleased that we can publicly boast about the research report .

Summary

Dietary supplements are supposed to support your health, so always reach for what is safe and reliable. We are happy that we offer our customers the highest quality with a clear conscience (and a test report). At Solve Labs, you have 100% authenticity confirmed by DNA tests. In other cases, you have to take the manufacturers' word for it.
